HOW TO PREVENT MEMORY LOSS

HOW TO PREVENT MEMORY LOSS

In 2003, famous Bollywood Film Director; Mr.Sanjay Leela Bhansali made Black; a movie of starring Amitabh Bachan and Rani Mukharjee. The story was based on the relation between an abnormal kid and her Teacher who has been hired by her parents to teach her at home. Later on, she fell in love with her teacher. The most horrible scene of the movie who inspired me to mention it here, is a scene when the teacher, Mr.Amitabh lost his memory. He lost his way to home. He even did not remember his name.
For a while, just imagine that you are outside and suddenly in the way of your home, you lose your memory. You sit aside to focus but in vain or you are on a trip and one day when you wake up in your hotel’s room, you forget everything and you are unable to recognize your loved ones, your friends, your siblings and even yourself. Honestly speaking, for me it is very difficult to even imagine this scenario.

Memory loss is very troublesome issue. Medically we classify memory loss into two categories; short term as well as long term. Normally during our life, we face this issue at some stage but to some degree and this situation is not permanent.
Beside other factors age is considered as the leading cause of memory loss. In recent researches certain other factors are also proven important. These factors include:
1)      Sleep apnea; it also known as absence or lack of breathing during sleep
2)      Poor sleep
3)      Anxiety or depression
4)      Nutritional deficiency such as deficiency of vitamin B12.
5)      Certain drugs for example Statins; a group of medicines used to treat hypercholesterolemia and Metformin a drug used to treat Diabetes.
Sleep apnea or anxiety or depression, basically these all contribute to poor sleep. Poor sleep causes early and rapid aging and degeneration of memory cells. This is the same mechanism that is described in Alzheimer disease; a neurodegenerative disease of old persons in which a person loses its personality along with dementia. It is very difficult to regenerate once memory cells are degenerated. In recent years, an extract of Ginkgobiloba leaves have been investigated to improve memory and other cognitive skills in patients of Alzheimer’s disease but its result is still inconclusive and controversial. Further it has been found dangerous for patients who are on other chronic medications like blood thinning drugs. So conclusively we can say that a life with balance diet, proper sleep and habit of dissolving anxiety may help us not to have memory loss.
